Volvo Aims for Zero Accidents

The Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in hybrid concept car created by General Motors. However, the company has avoided the use of the term "hybrid," preferring to call it an electric vehicle with a "range extender" due to its design. The vehicle is designed to run purely on electricity from on-board batteries for up to 40 miles (64 km) —which is a large enough distance to cover the daily commutes of most Americans, which is around 25 miles (40 km). With use of a small internal combustion engine hooked to a generator to resupply the batteries, the vehicle's range is potentially increased to 640 miles (1,030 km) on the highway. General Motors Corp. had originally planned to build 60,000 of its Volt electric cars for their inaugural year, however have now scaled back production to 10,000 units.

The Volt concept vehicle was officially unveiled at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) on January 7, 2007 in Detroit, Michigan. An updated version was unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2007 in Shanghai, China. At the time of unveiling, the Volt project had been in existence for less than a year. The Volt was targeted to cost around $20K to 30K, but Bob Lutz has indicated that $30-40K is more likely. As of April 2008 Lutz said that the realistic unsubsidised cost has risen to $48k.

Porsche Boxster is a mid-engined roadster built by Porsche. The Boxster is Porsche's first vehicle designed by Raymond Barth from the beginning as a roadster; all previous Porsche convertibles were based on hardtop coupes.

The first-generation Boxster (the 986) was introduced in late 1996 as a 1997 model; it was powered by a 2.5 litre flat six-cylinder engine. In 2000, the new Boxster S variant was introduced with a larger 3.2 litre motor, and the base model received a more powerful 2.7 litre engine. In 2003, styling and engine output was upgraded on both variants.

The BMW CS Concept was a concept car produced by BMW in 2007. It is a fastback sedan that features many new innovations for BMW, such as door handles that only come out when sensors detect motion. Unconfirmed rumors suggest this concept may see production in the form of the new BMW 8 Series. Unlike the previous 8 Series, which was a coupe, the CS would be a four-door with coupe styling, similar to the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class. With dimensions slightly bigger than the E65 7-series,[1][2] its competition is expected to be slightly more upmarket than the previous 8 series, and will include the Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin Rapide, and the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class.

2008 Acura TLHonda/Acura had its 2009 dealer meeting in New Orleans last week, and a little birdie that claims to have attended has whispered some details about the 2009 Acura TL in our ears. According to our anonymous tipster, the '09 TL range will consist of two models. The front-wheel-drive car will be powered by a 3.5L V6 delivering 280 horsepower. The step-up version will feature SH AWD and have a 3.7L, 300-horsepower V6 underhood (presumably the same one used in the MDX). We're told the latter car is not a Type-S, by the way -- that trim level goes back into hibernation with the arrival of the '09. Word is, the car "looks amazing." The TL in its current state is Acura's best-looking vehicle, so our curiosity is definitely piqued.

From the Mustang to the Viper and Veyron, Hennessey Performance has spread its abilities across the performance car spectrum. And with hi-po vehicles like the IS F, ZR1, and GT-R on their way to buyers' garages, John Hennessey says he is working on packages to make all of those cars even higher-po.

The IS F looks to be the first in line, with the experiment subject arriving at Hennessey's shop next week. The car will be a test bed for "headers, exhaust and air induction systems first. Then maybe a blower." He's also got his eye on the baddest boy Corvette ZR1, for which his website advertises "700+ HP coming soon!" The physics-defying GT-R is in the crosshairs as well, and if he can make it better than it already is, that would be among the best testaments for his services.

Coming down just a notch -- but still up there -- the Cadillac CTS-V and Camaro will get their chances for glory as well. While all of this sounds great, what we really hope is that none of this extra work causes Hennessey not to give us the Venom. That's the package we are truly dying to see.

We don’t want to take sides on London’s Congestion Charge, but we are keenly interested in what the charge will mean for the environment and motorists. Ken Livingstone claims that the charge is intended to reduce congestion and CO2 emissions while Porsche claims that the charges are unnecessarily high and unfair. New evidence that Porsche has located, though, indicates that CO2 emissions will actually increase if the charges go into effect as planned. In fact, Porsche claims that the mayors office was aware of this report and chose not to release it.

The report, prepared for Transport for London by King’s College London’s Environmental Research Group, predicted that the charges would create a “very high disbenefit” not only for CO2 but also for NOx, NO2 and particulate matter. The reason cited for the increased emissions is that drivers will choose to drive around London instead of driving straight through, which would be a much shorter trip. London’s emissions may drop, but the surrounding areas will be disproportionately hurt.

According to Andy Goss, Managing Director of Porsche Cars GB, “We always knew the environmental impact of this unfair tax would be minimal, now we know it will make matters worse. The Mayor and TfL need to explain why this report was not disclosed and why they want to increase taxes on motorists that will increase CO2. It seems absolutely clear that the report shows that not only have Mayor Livingstone and TfL not presented all of the information to the public about the impact of his £25 charge, but that they have also created a new tax on motorists that will do the exact opposite of its stated goal.” Read more of Porsche’s response here.

The Magna MILA Alpin concept car shown in Geneva has gotten the attention of both Mercedes and BMW. The button-cute 4-wheeler rode on a flexible platform, could utilize a variety of fuel sources, climb 45-degree angles, and get up to 120 mph. Those capabilities, and the ability to be easily rebodied and cost-effectively manufactured, have the two premium brands looking at ways to bolster their lineups and enviro-credentials.

Mercedes is known to be working on developing a 4-wheel-drive A-Class sedan. While the sandwich floors in the A-Class and B-Class cars were specifically created to allow flexible drivetrains, it is open to exploring options with BMW. Those other Bavarians in blue and white appear to be even more serious, having engaged Magna to discuss strategy and market demand. The MILA could provide a sound platform for BMW's electric car rumblings, as well as cost-effective, outsourced manufacturing.

From the some-automakers-have-more-money-than-sense department comes a new commercial for the Audi RS6. The minute-long teaser spot features some kind of synchronized gymnastics routine that we guess is supposed to signify a bunch of people working together like a finely tuned machine. We think there are some gymnasts imitating the pistons in the blisteringly fast RS6 V10, and there was a human crankshaft and some headlights too, but it's hard to tell with it being people in tights and all. The last three seconds is the first indication that this is a car commercial, as the front end of the sledge hammer RS6 is finally shown.

We know it's a teaser ad, but next time we'd like to see a little more sheet metal and a lot less flesh. Besides, didn't Ford just do the people as cars thing a couple months ago? Hit the jump to view the minute-long commercial, then let us know what you think in the comments.

Mercedes-Benz CEO Dieter Zetsche told Motor Trend this week that increased cost was not going to be an issue for his company to meet new fuel economy standards. Obviously getting improved efficiency out of powertrains would make them more expensive as they have to meet U.S. CAFE and European CO2 emissions limits. However, while U.S. executives like Bob Lutz are talking about adding $5,000 or more to the price to meet 35mpg standards, Zetsche looks at it differently. The use of clean diesels, HCCI DiesOtto engines, hybrids and fuel cells will raise prices. The higher initial purchase price will be offset for customers through reduced operating costs. According to Zetsche, if the cost premium can be recovered through fuel savings in the first 3-4 years of driving than customers will be satisfied. Mercedes also intends to protect their ten percent profit margins through increased efficiencies in other areas of the vehicle. That probably means that Mercedes owners will give up some features for improved efficiency. Of course for a premium brand like Mercedes, it’s a lot easier to talk about protecting margins than it is for mainstream brands like GM and Ford. Being largely rid of the burden of Chrysler probably doesn’t hurt either. Finally Zetsche says an S-Class diesel hybrid will debut in two years with DiesOtto engines about 3-5 years out.

The Subaru WRX STI has the speed and agility to be a track star, but on dirt, few machines on earth can keep up with the sprightly little screamer. The impressive little Scooby can scoot just like the last-gen model, but now it does it with a refinement the old model lacked. For fans and foes of the AWD pocket rocket, team Subie made a one-minute video tribute to the coolness that is STI. Hit the jump to view some seriously amazing jumps, flips, spin-outs, crashes, and power slides featuring the old car that concludes with the '08 ride tearing up the tarmac. Click the Tahoe hybrid for a high-res gallery

Regardless of your viewpoint on the role that the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon Hybrid play in the marketplace, the engineering that went into the vehicles is laudable. Seamlessly integrating the dual gasoline and electric drivetrains has managed to win GM’s engineering team the award for the Best Engineered Vehicles of 2008 by the SAE International’s Automotive Engineering International magazine.

Says Kevin Jost, Editorial Director of Automotive Engineering International, said “The vehicles’ advanced technology enables consumers looking for an efficient SUV a choice that does not involve sacrificing a cargo-hauling and trailer-towing capacity in return for improved fuel economy.” We agree that for those who really do need the capabilities that only a full-size SUV can offer, the hybrid-duo from GM is the best bet when it comes to gasoline savings. But how many of you are there, really? The press release is pasted after the break for your perusal and click here to read our complete review of the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid.

Press Release:

Automotive Engineering International Names General Motors’ SUV Hybrids Best Engineered Vehicles of 2008

WARRENDALE, Pa., April 11 — Readers and editors of SAE International’s Automotive Engineering International (AEI) magazine crown General Motors’ Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and GMC Yukon Hybrid as 2008’s Best Engineered Vehicles.

“General Motors has significantly re-engineered its class-leading full-size sport utility vehicles - the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon - with the first application of groundbreaking hybrid technology,” Kevin Jost, Editorial Director of Automotive Engineering International, said. “The vehicles’ advanced technology enables consumers looking for an efficient SUV a choice that does not involve sacrificing a cargo-hauling and trailer-towing capacity in return for improved fuel economy.”

The Tahoe and Yukon Hybrids boast improved fuel economy compared to their gasoline-only counterparts. This is due to a state-of-the-art two-mode hybrid system developed in partnership with BMW and DaimlerChrysler.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ratings for the two-wheel drive models are 21 miles per gallon (mpg) for city driving and 22 mpg for highway driving. The four-wheel drive models achieve an EPA rating of 20 mpg city/highway.

The vehicles still deliver full-size SUV performance, with a 6,200-pound towing capacity for the two-wheel drive models, and a 12,000-pound Gross Combination Weight Rating for the four-wheel drive models. Both seat eight passengers.

The Best Engineered Vehicle award winners will be announced at the SAE 2008 World Congress, to be held April 14-17 at Cobo Center, Detroit. The winners also will be published in AEI’s May 2008 edition.

Nunez's ride this week...

We Autobloggers chat on AIM all the time. Imagine a text-only version of the podcast, only 100 times more scatterbrained (who knew this was even possible?), and you'll get the general idea . So anyway, here's an exchange between The Neff and myself from earlier this afternoon, in which he hits me with a solid uppercut using his Brass Knuckles of Perspective. I think they may have bits of dead Alero cast into them.

Neff: Chris Grant from Joystiq got Sony to send us a review copy of GT5 Prologue
Neff:
Arriving Tuesday

Nunez: You are such a d**k
Neff: Okay Mr. RS4
Nunez: HAHAHAHA
Neff: At least the car in your driveway right now is real
Nunez: I want to drive a PRETEND RS4, too!

Let the online play begin. What Neff doesn't tell you is that he -- at this very moment -- is writing up something that makes the (undeniably, ridiculously badass) RS4 press car parked out in my driveway seem like a Kia Optima. But you'll have to wait until Monday to read about that. Oh, and as it happens, I can't drive a pretend RS4 in GT5 Prologue when it arrives this week, anyway. I'll have to make do with the real thing.

We’ve been over the Civic Hybrid which was decorated by Panic At The Disco before, along with the dates and locations where fans of the band (or the car) can pick up the associated tour. Therefore, this is just a friendly reminder that the tour itself started on Friday, April 10. We’d likely have forgotten all about it ourselves if it hadn’t been for the press release (pasted after the break, naturally) issued by Honda on the matter. If you don’t yet have tickets and want to pick them up, you still have time. Not all dates are sold out yet and the tour is running through June 14.

While we’re on the subject, we may as well chime in that PATD’s new record, Pretty. Odd. (Decaydance/Fueled By Ramen), is currently available as well.

Press Release:

Honda Civic Tour Featuring Panic At The Disco Gets the Show on the Road Today

Las Vegas Quartet Riding High on Success of Sophomore Release, Pretty. Odd., #2 Hit on Billboard 200 Album Chart, #1 on SoundScan Current Alternative Albums

NEW YORK, April 10 — Finally satisfying fevered fan anticipation, the Honda Civic Tour featuring Panic At The Disco gets underway today. The band is now on the road in support of their sophomore release, Pretty. Odd. (Decaydance/Fueled By Ramen), which debuted at #2 on the SoundScan/Billboard 200 album chart and #1 on SoundScan’s Current Alternative Albums chart.

The Honda Civic Tour (http://www.hondacivictour.com) kicks off with two sold-out shows at The Warfield in San Francisco (April 10 and 11) and will subsequently power through sold-out dates in San Diego (April 12), Austin (April 19), Orlando (April 24), New York (May 7), Toronto (May 14), Indianapolis (May 19), Detroit (May 20), Chicago (May 23) and St. Louis (May 30), among numerous other stops, before crossing the finish line June 14 at The Theatre at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. New dates have just been added, in Charlotte, N.C. (April 27 at Amos’ Southend), and Grand Rapids, Mich. (May 21 at The Orbit Room). The Atlanta show, meanwhile, has been moved to a larger venue, Masquerade Music Park.

Motion City Soundtrack, The Hush Sound and Phantom Planet — as well as the Honda Civic Hybrid customized and autographed by Panic At The Disco — will serve as the tour’s supporting attractions. The 2008 incarnation of the Honda Civic Tour is also notable for the expanded participation of Honda’s operations in Canada, where the Honda Civic has been the top-selling car for a decade (and where Pretty. Odd. debuted at #2). Canadian Honda Civic Tour dates include Montreal, May 13 at Metropolis; Toronto, May 14 at Sound Academy; and Vancouver, June 6 at PNE Forum.

Panic guitarist-songwriter Ryan Ross reflected on the tour’s launch: “The Civic Tour is a super-big deal for us and we’ve been looking forward to it for a while. Plus, the band’s totally excited to play the new songs for the fans. We know the energy at these shows is gonna be amazing. We can’t wait to get onstage.”

PATD enjoyed their best sales week ever following the March 25 release of Pretty. Odd., which racked up 139,000 albums sold, earning it a #2 position on SoundScan’s Digital Albums chart in addition to its Billboard 200 #2 and SoundScan Current Alternative Albums #1. First single “Nine in the Afternoon” is a Top 10 hit at Alternative radio outlets nationwide, with significant airplay logged at the Top 40, Hot AC and AAA formats as well.

The buzz surrounding Panic At The Disco is reflected in their appearance on the current cover of Alternative Press (May 2008 issue). The follow-up to PATD’s platinum-certified debut album, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out (2005), Pretty. Odd. is receiving acclaim from critics. SPIN gave it four stars, deeming the disc “blindingly bright” and “optimistically beautiful.” Rolling Stone cited Panic’s “broad sense of humor.” And esteemed New York Times scribe Jon Pareles called Pretty. Odd. “the magnum opus of a talented band.”

In 2006 the video for Panic At The Disco’s “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” was named Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards. That clip was directed by Shane Drake, who returned to lense the “Nine in the Afternoon” video, which is #3-most-played on MTV and #10-most-played on MTV2 (#1 on Fuse). Speaking of MTV love, this week’s installment of “52 Bands/52 Weeks” will feature Panic At The Disco, and PATD recently wrapped a performance at MTV’s Spring Break ‘08 that will be broadcast today on “TRL.” The band received another small-screen boost when it appeared on “Saturday Night Live” April 5.

See Panic At The Disco live through June 14 on the Honda Civic Tour.

It's an unconfirmed rumor that Ford's going to make its Super Duty pickups shiftless, but the mere whiff of a reduction in choices is likely set enthusiasts afire with rage. The merits of standard versus automatic transmissions in trucks that routinely tow and generally work hard is a debate for another time, but the real crux of the biscuit comes down to cost. As it stands now, you can get a Power Stroke diesel with a manual for $1500 less than a self-shifter. If Ford removes the standard transmission from its Power Stroke offerings, does that mean that it will pass some of the savings on to consumers by reducing the price of the automatic? Not bloody likely. A more probable scenario would see the price of the Power Stroke option rising.

With all the attention being paid to alternative fuels, it is not surprising that Big Oil should launch a PR counteroffensive. The American Petroleum Institute (API), advertising itself as “the People of America’s Oil and Natural Gas Industry,” is running a new TV ad, Delivering America’s Energy Security, which can be viewed at their website at energytomorrow.com. Their contention is that there is still so much oil under America that we can achieve energy independence without getting off oil for a long time. According to API, there are “112 billion barrels of technically recoverable oil beneath U.S. federal lands and coastal waters. That’s enough oil to fuel 60 million cars for 60 years.” Unfortunately, we already seem to have about 250,000,000 passenger vehicles in the U.S. And perhaps we don’t have 60 years to reverse the effects of 100 years of gasoline-powered internal combustion.

Does Ferrari lower itself to do a podcast? No - and you could argue that it doesn't need to. Lamborghini has always had a knack for forging its own way, and rather than acting aloof, it's inviting everyone into the cult of the brand. The big tent that Lamborghini's erected in the iTunes store is called "The World of Lamborghini," and it strikes us a a very smart marketing move.

To geek out for a moment, we think it's a good use of marketing dollars because while the production costs are obviously significant, distribution costs are far less than even a modest broadcast campaign. Besides, when was the last time you saw a Lamborghini spot? Right. The podcasting effort will further cement Lamborghini's aspirational, yet within reach, status. It also helps that the videos Lamborghini is disseminating are hella cool, and thus work just as designed. Our Reventon lust is even more serious now that we've seen the video that's reminiscent of the Six Million Dollar Man. Check it out on iTunes.

A project in Finland is aiming to use the power of open-source to gather a critical mass of people interested in converting cars to electric power. The idea is get enough people who are interested in doing the project so that the cost can be brought down to a point where it becomes affordable. Whether the target of 500 orders is sufficient make the cost of a converted Toyota Corolla comparable to the price of the original car is debatable. It seems like they would need much larger volumes than that to achieve economies of scale. The open-source part of the project involves bringing interested and skilled people in to contribute to the engineering and development of the conversions kits. If people would donate their time that would certainly reduce a lot of overhead cost, but there are no guarantees that you could actually get the right people involved to make this viable in any kind of reasonable time frame. After all, most open-source software projects take many years to finally reach a production release level and we are not talking about a trivial task with converting a car to electric drive. Nonetheless support is growing quickly, with over 300 people signing up in the first ten days of the project.

Read about other open source green car projects here and here.

It was only a matter of time before Abt got its hands on a Volkswagen R32. The hot hatch is no slouch in stock form with 250 horsepower, but Abt has boosted output to 370 bhp via a supercharger complete with a water-cooled intercooler. This knocks the 0-60 mph time down to 5.0 seconds flat and raises the top speed to 167 mph. Abt has also fitted the R32 with an adjustable sport suspension, as well as 19-inch BR wheels. England’s Smith Electric Vehicles already produces a battery-powered version of Ford’s big European transit van. It now looks like they may soon add a new one based on the compact Transit Connect. The electric Transit Connect may debut in the UK by the end of 2008 and will likely cost twice as much as the current diesel version. The battery-powered van is expected to have a range of 100 miles and top speed of 70mph. Factoring in operating costs, the electric van should be cheaper than the diesel version after five years of operation. Ford announced plans to bring a gasoline-powered version of the Transit Connect to the U.S. earlier this year at the Chicago Auto Show.

This eBay auction seeks to find out if there are any set of circumstances under which an AMC Pacer is worth the Buy-It-Now price of $8 grand. So far, the answer is no, but there's still a day left. For fans of the movie Wayne's World, this vehicle could offer a unique opportunity to grab a piece of movie magic, as it was built by Paramount Studios as a prop for the Paramount Kings Island theme-park ride, Hurler, based on the Wayne's World series of movies. Wondering how you could be sure that this is legit? Worry not, it comes with a signed letter of authenticity from Volo Museum and the hood is signed by none other than George Barris himself.

No word on whether or not the "SHA WING" Ohio license plate is included in the asking price. We do have it on good authority, though, that the car has never been spewed in. Thanks for the tip, Stu!

Two companies, Holcim and Aurantia are starting a new project to reuse CO2. They take the CO2 produced by a cement plant in Jerez de la Frontera in Spain and “feed” it to microalgae which then turn around and produce biodiesel. The results of this project will be tested to assess if the carbon dioxide supplied by the cement plant is suitable for the algae. The two companies will also select the best type of algae for the project as well as assessing the viability of the project. The test will be performed on an-almost industrial scale, so once the final green light is given, it could start working immediately.
