Today the Chevy Volt passes from the vaporware stage into the physical manifestation of GM's efforts to bring the series hybrid to production as promised. Though what you're looking at is the body of a last-gen Malibu, we have confirmation that underneath is the Volt's E-Flex powertrain being track-tested for the first time, or at least the first time in front of a spy photographer's zoom lens. Of course, there are still a lot of questions surrounding the Volt, like whether or not GM will meet its self-imposed deadline of late 2010 for production, or if the price will continue to rise above the estimated $35,000 we've heard thrown around. What we do know is that the E-Flex powertrain will be paired with the next-generation Delta chassis. Two suppliers, Continental Automotive Systems and A123 Systems, are tasked with developing the Volt's all-important lithium-ion battery pack that has to achieve the difficult mark of allowing the Volt to operate for 40 miles on electric power alone. There's still a lot of work to do and not a lot of time left to do it, so it's good seeing GM finally driving the Volt around.

GM has been rather open when it comes to discussing the ongoing development of the Chevy Volt. Check here for our latest round of updates and you’ll see that the Volt is moving along quite nicely. Still, there’s a long way to go before the vehicle is ready for the road. The test track though, as you can see in the photo above, is another story entirely. According to Brenda Priddy’s spy photographers, the Volt’s E-Flex underpinnings are currently being tested cloaked under last-generation Malibu bodywork. We knew they’d be coming and are glad to see some visual proof. The production Volt will be based on GM’s Delta platform, not the Malibu’s architecture. The mules you see in these shots should contain an electric motor, an engine/generator set and some of the first battery packs from CPI and Continental. We’re anxiously awaiting our chance to get a ride in one of these Malibu-bodied E-Flex mules.

Click above for more pics of the Ferrari F2008 in Bahrain

Though most other F1 teams have banished cigarette advertisements from their fenders in the past few years, Ferrari has stubbornly displayed Marlboro logos on its formula one cars wherever the law allows. Someone within Ferrari has apparently had a change of heart, as many noticed at the Bahrain Grand Prix earlier this month that the F2008 car was without its familiar cigarette advertisements, despite the laws of that country allowing their presence. In their place was what's been referred to as the "barcode" livery, which some say looks like the Marlboro branding from a distance, but is really just white markings that don't mean anything. After the race, Ferrari did confirm that Marlboro logos would no longer appear on its cars, which kind of ends an era of sorts. Despite the absence of its logos on the F2008, Marlboro is reportedly still happy to be a sponsor of Ferrari and will remain so until at least 2011 when the contract it signed worth around $1 billion runs out.

A new site called Riceboy TV has hit the world wide web. It is brought to us by a couple of guys who jumped ship from Super Street Magazine shortly before Primedia sold off all its enthusiast titles. The website content is aimed at the same tuner market as Super Street, only delivered more speedily and a lot more animated. With founders known by such names as Nads and Rik Daddy, one can imagine that this site is not intended for the serious, uptight automotive consumer. Instead, it caters to those who could use video instruction on how to install their first cold air intake or brake caliper upgrade. It also offers event and feature car video coverage with commentary by folks with in-depth market knowledge. For those who might have perused the tuner magazines for more than just the vehicular content, don't worry, they didn't forget the silicone, either.

That’s a question that defies a simple answer right now. In large part that’s because oil companies are so opaque about the realities of their business. Detroit News columnist John McCormick ponders the question of the recent run-up in diesel prices just months ahead of the launch of a slew of new diesel-powered vehicles. Typically, diesel fuel in the U.S. has been at parity or slightly more expensive than gasoline. But in the past couple of months it has shot up to be about thirty percent more expensive. Interestingly, that’s just about the efficiency advantage that diesel engines have over gasoline varieties. Is there a connection? Who knows? I certainly don’t. But when oil companies are making tens of billions of dollars in profits every quarter, it becomes increasingly difficult to cut them any slack when it comes to the subject of paying for expanded refinery capacity or adjusting the mix of gasoline to diesel fuel. I’m not saying there is any big conspiracy by the oil companies. Because we all know they wouldn’t do that, would they?

Pininfarina is making its voice heard designs seen in China, with 30-percent of the company's business now being done with the Asian nation. At this month's Beijing Motor Show, two Chinese automakers will reveal three models designed and, in some cases, engineered by the Italian firm. What's more, all of the cars are meant to be sold in the European market, as well.

Anhui Jianghuai will have two Pininfarina designed cars, a sedan code named A108 (pictured) and a five-door hatch code named A107. They are meant to hit European markets in late 2009. Brilliance, which is BMW's Chinese partner, will be showing off the BS4 station wagon. It will head to Europe with the re-engineered BS6 sedan.

Though they won't be unveiling new cars, Pininfarina's other Chinese clients include Chery, Changfeng, and Hafei, who together have at least seven cars penned by Ferrari's favorite design house.

Oftentimes, when the subject of oil appears on the internet, a raging debate ensues regarding which brand offers the highest quality or whether or not synthetic is superior to straight dino-oil. We’re not touching that one today, but we would like to remind our readers of the importance of recycling your used motor oil. Matt Hale, Director of EPA’s Office of Solid Waste, says, “Recycling used motor oil conserves energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and prevents the possible contamination of our nation’s drinking water supplies.” How bad could a little used motor oil be on our water supplies? We’ll let Castrol explain: ‘one oil change — improperly disposed and not recycled — can contaminate one million gallons of fresh water, which is a year’s supply for 50 people.’ With that information firmly in mind, Castrol has teamed up with Earth911.com to educate people on oil recycling.

We’ve pasted a press release regarding the subject after the break. For tips on oil recycling and to find your nearest oil collection center, check out Castol’s site here and Earth911.com here.

Press Release:

Responsible Car Care Includes Recycling Used Motor Oil

Wayne, N.J.-Changing your car’s motor oil is an important part of maintaining engine protection and performance. However, Earth911.com states most people do not realize that what is done after the oil change is just as important. With National Car Care month and Earth Week approaching in April, Castrol and Earth911.com are making sure the potential environmental impact of automotive maintenance is top of mind for car owners nationwide.

According to Castrol, almost half of the oil changes done in the United States are performed by car owners who do it themselves. Although the majority of those people follow proper procedures, one oil change-improperly disposed and not recycled-can contaminate one million gallons of fresh water, which is a year’s supply for 50 people. With some basic information at http://www.castrol.com/recycling, Americans can learn tips on how to properly dispose of used motor oil as well as locate area recycling centers.

“Many times it is a lack of information that prevents people from acting responsibly,” said Derrick Mains, VP of Energy Reclamation Initiatives with Earth911.com. “Earth911.com and Castrol hope to help inform the public about the issue of improperly disposing used motor oil and give those that change their own oil the resources to take the necessary steps toward safe recycling.”

Used motor oil is insoluble, slow to degrade and can contain heavy metals. Used motor oil, if not disposed of properly or recycled, can be a source of contamination in waterways and can result in pollution of drinking-water sources.

“We all have a responsibility to help protect the environment,” said Matt McHale, Associate Brand Manager at Castrol. “Castrol is dedicated to helping the public find quick and simple ways to recycle used motor oil and lower the possibility of improper disposal.”

According to Castrol, part of the teaching process is to clarify misconceptions regarding the issue. A common misconception is that oil recycling centers are difficult to find. However, there are more than 30,000 convenient recycling centers nationwide, and a majority of automotive shops and quick lube retailers will take used motor oil if it is in a proper container, like a sealable, approved oil drip pan or a motor oil bottle.

“EPA appreciates the efforts of entities like Earth911.com and Castrol who provide consumers with information about the importance and convenience of recycling used motor oil,” said Matt Hale, Director of EPA’s Office of Solid Waste. “Recycling used motor oil conserves energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and prevents the possible contamination of our nation’s drinking water supplies.”

At first glance this could be Super Aguri's latest F1 contender. It's not like they need any bodywork for all their sponsors' stickers...

But no, it is a limited edition Takuma Sato Play Seat that can be parked in front of your TV for just 60,900 cents/Yen (around $600 USD). There goes that precious living room square footage freed up by last year's purchase of an ultra thin widescreen plasma display. Play Seats are comaptible with PS2s, 3s, Wiis and X-Boxes, and we're just aching to give one, or preferably two, a test drive. Fortunatley, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue came out yesterday and a few of us have it in hand, though we're not sure how we're going to convince AOL that a Play Seat is a required business expense for reviewing the game.

Now we know a bit more about the White House’s U-Turn on global warming. President Bush made a speech in the Rose Garden today calling for a stop to greenhouse gas emissions growth in the U.S. by 2025. As NPR phrased it, that’s when babies born this year will be in high school.

As we heard earlier this week, the White House is afraid that changes to the status quo that might come about thanks to things like the legal challenges about the EPA’s ability to regulate greenhouse gases could result in a regulatory trainwreck on greenhouse gas issues. Bush said today that he was concerned that legislation that Congress is looking to pass could hurt economic growth. The President did not issue a lot of details about his cautious plan that is far weaker than European plans, but that didn’t stop Democrats from saying it was too little, too late. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-California) called it “worse than doing nothing … the height of irresponsibility.”

German tuner Geiger Cars is partial to modifying American cars, so it was an obvious choice to use the Corvette Z06 as a base for its latest special edition car. Dubbed the Corvette Z06 Black Edition, Geiger adds a unique body kit with a Ferrari F430-ish rear end and LED taillights, as well as a more aggressive front lip. Black painted rims are available in both 18- and 19-inch sizes, as well. Output of the 7.0-liter V8 is listed as unchanged at 505 bhp and 470 lb-ft torque, although Geiger does offer a Stage 1 performance kit for the Z06 that includes a new air intake system, upgraded exhaust manifolds, and a free-flowing exhaust system good for 542 bhp. We would insert a joke right here about KITT from Knight Rider or maybe Darth Vader, but it's been a long day and there's not much else to say besides that's one blacked-out 'Vette.

When we first heard about the new mono-fuel BMW Hydrogen 7, we were rather impressed by the extremely low emissions numbers posted by the model when tested at Argonne National Laboratory. The fact that BMW was able to reduce the emissions, boast better range and make more power as compared to their previous-generation Hydrogen 7 was pretty cool. According to Dr. Thomas Wallner, lead engineer in Argonne’s hydrogen vehicle testing activities, “[The Hydrogen 7’s] engine actively cleans the air. Argonne’s testing shows that the Hydrogen 7’s engine actually shows emissions levels that, for certain components, such as Non Methane Organic Gases (NMOG’s) and Carbon Monoxides (CO’s), are cleaner than the ambient air that comes into the car’s engine.”

So, because air is required for the hydrogen combustion, and there are pollutants already present in the air, at times the exhaust from the BMW is cleaner than the air it took in. Does that warrant BMW referring to their hydrogen-burner as a “pollution-consuming internal combustion engine?” Perhaps we’re just picking nits, but that sounds a wee bit like greenwashing. It’s not like the overall air is cleaner after going through the system, after all. Read their entire press release after the break.

Press Release:

BMW SHOWCASES POLLUTION-CONSUMING INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE VEHICLE AT 2008 SAE WORLD CONGRESS

Woodcliff Lake, NJ - April 14, 2008… BMW announces its latest milestone in its pursuit of the hydrogen future, the BMW Hydrogen 7 mono-fuel, featuring an internal combustion engine in the BMW Hydrogen 7 mono-fuel that produces near zero emissions while, at the same time, combusting ambient air pollutants. Based on the BMW Hydrogen 7 bi-fuel version (gasoline and hydrogen), the new mono-fuel vehicle’s internal combustion engine is optimized to run solely on hydrogen and shares the performance, comfort, and safety qualities of every production BMW 7 Series. One of the BMW Hydrogen 7 mono-fuel vehicles is featured in the BMW Booth at the 2008 SAE World Congress being held this week in Detroit.

The BMW Hydrogen 7 mono-fuel is equipped with a 6.0-liter internal combustion engine (ICE) which has been engineered to run exclusively on hydrogen. This vehicle achieves near zero emissions, excellent engine performance, reduced fuel consumption and greater range compared to the bi-fuel Hydrogen 7. Since the consumed hydrogen has no carbon, the engine itself would produce no CO2, hydrocarbons, or other pollutants; however, the existing pollutants in the surrounding air are consumed by the engine, plus minute amounts of lubricating oil. The result is virtually undetectable exhaust emissions. New procedures for exhaust gas measurement and analysis, therefore, had to be developed together with experts at the Argonne National Laboratory, the only test laboratory in the USA capable of measuring such minute emissions.

“The mono-fuel Hydrogen 7 is the result of more than 25 years of hydrogen development by BMW,” noted Tom Baloga, Vice-President of Engineering for BMW in the U.S. “It demonstrates BMW’s support for a hydrogen infrastructure by producing an internal combustion engine that produces truly near-zero emissions while simultaneously cleaning the air of certain pollutants.”

In BMW’s view, hydrogen is the most logical energy carrier of the future for three reasons. First, it has no carbon and therefore hydrogen combustion generates no CO2, HCs and other pollutants. Second, it can be produced using renewable, clean technologies like solar, wind, geothermal, and bio-processes. Lastly,it can be produced in stable areas of the globe as necessary for energy security. Although today’s hydrogen is mainly derived from natural gas, hydrogen can and will be “green” from renewable and clean sources in the future. Unlike batteries, which will likely also play an important role in future transportation, hydrogen vehicles can be refueled rather quickly for long trips, don’t require powerlines across the landscape, and hydrogen can be generated and stored 24/7 when wind is greatest or demand for electricity is low.

The BMW Hydrogen 7 mono-fuel is a demonstration production vehicle, not a prototype. It was created to showcase the clean energy potential and feasibility of a dedicated hydrogen ICE. In addition, the BMW Hydrogen 7 mono-fuel delivers additional experience in the everyday use of hydrogen beyond what has already been learned with the nearly 100 bi-fuel Hydrogen 7 Sedans that have been used in a consumer test drive program since November 2006.

The Hydrogen 7’s mono-fuel ICE exemplifies BMW’s commitment to clean energy while maintaining the excellent performance BMW owners have come to expect. In fact, the tailpipe emissions are so infinitesimal, they pushed the limits of current emission testing technology.

Independent authorities, including Argonne, have confirmed the excellent results. Argonne conducted emission tests on BMW Hydrogen 7 mono-fuel vehicles in early March 2008 and helped develop new sophisticated procedures necessary to detect the almost undetectable.

“The BMW Hydrogen 7’s emissions were only a fraction of SULEV level, making it one of the lowest emitting combustion engine vehicles that have been manufactured,” said Dr. Thomas Wallner, lead engineer in Argonne’s hydrogen vehicle testing activities. “Moreover, the car’s engine actively cleans the air. Argonne’s testing shows that the Hydrogen 7’s engine actually shows emissions levels that, for certain components, such as Non Methane Organic Gases (NMOG’s) and Carbon Monoxides (CO’s), are cleaner than the ambient air that comes into the car’s engine.” This means that a hydrogen-powered ICE is not only incredibly clean by itself, but it actually removes certain air polluting gases from natural and man-made sources.

BMW and Argonne will hold a joint press conference about the ground-breaking results at the SAE Congress in Detroit at the BMW booth beginning at 1:30 pm (EST) on Monday, April 14th. Christoph Huss, Vice-President-Development Abroad, Type Approval and Traffic Management; Tom Baloga, Vice-President - Engineering US; and Wolfgang Thiel, Manager of Emissions Testing Equipment, will represent BMW at the press conference. Wallner and Don Hillebrand, Director of the Center for Transportation Research, will represent Argonne.

By now everyone knows the story about Bridgestone's massive recall of tires that were used as original equipment on Ford Explorers from 1991 to 2001. The faulty tires had been linked to some fatal crashes that were caused by either blowouts or the tread separating from the tires. Many people who own Explorers from this period were miffed that the value of their SUVs dropped solely on account of Bridgestone's mistake, so they did what most Americans do when they're angry: they sued Ford. Yesterday a judge in the Sacramento Country Superior Court approved a settlement for this class-action lawsuit on behalf of approximately 800,000 Explorer owners that will cost Ford a sizable chunk of change, but it's not the Explorer owners who got the most money. As part of the settlement, Ford has agreed to hand out discount certificates valid for one year that these plaintiffs can apply to the purchase or lease of a FoMoCo product.

The discounts are worth $500 if applied to a new Explorer, and $300 if applied to any other Ford, Lincoln or Mercury product. The discounts would cost the Dearborn-based automaker about $400 million if every plaintiff went out and bought a brand new Explorer within the next year, though we bet Ford's counting on that scenario being highly unlikely. The lawyers that fought the class-action lawsuit, however, will receive $25 million from Ford for their trouble. We bet none of them will go out and buy a new Explorer with that money.

Spark-EV’s Michael Papp’s future might not be looking up. As you probably remember, Papp was arrested last week for not delivering 14 electric vehicles to two companies, Electric Cars of Houston and Electric Transportation of Arkansas. Penn Live has posted an article from The Express-Times that says that the local District Attorney, John Morganelli, is checking into filing additional charges against Papp. Morganelli said that Papp has been on his radar for a while.

Papp now says he plans to refund the $100,000 he accepted from the two EV companies “but could not immediately give back the wired payments,” the Express-Times wrote. Papp also said he can prove the cars are ordered and en route to the two companies. We’ll see, won’t we?

General Motors announced today that it has aligned the sales, service and marketing of its brands into four distinct channels. They include the Chevrolet Channel; Buick-Pontiac-GMC (BPG) Channel; the Premium Channel that encompasses Cadillac; Saab and HUMMER; and what's called the Channel Support Group (CSG). Other media outlets like Automotive News insist Saturn is one of the channels, so we assume it will fall under the CSG, though it will still be lead by its current General Manager, Jill Lajdziak.

One big score for the General was hiring on Mark McNabb, who comes to GM from his former position at Nissan where he was corporate vice-pres of Infiniti and the senior vice-pres of sales and marketing for Nissan North America. McNabb has been crowned the North American Vice President of the newly minted Premium Channel and will oversee sales, service and marketing for Cadillac, Saab and HUMMER. Otherwise, it seems GM has just switched around who reports to who and who is responsible for what when it comes to sales, service and marketing, hopefully in the interest of building a better automaker, but time will tell us that soon enough.

We don't know if the shot you see above is an official picture of the new F01 BMW 7 Series or not, but it looks to be a pretty accurate rendition of what we've seen so far in spy shots. The front of the car apes the design language of the BMW CS Concept rather nicely, with dual oversized kidney-shaped grilles dominating the rather sedate-looking headlights. The sides are mostly devoid of flame surfacing, with a high character line drawing the eyes to the rear where the bangle-butt of the old model gets major lipo. We also note that the design mimics the current high-beltline trend, reducing the total surface area of glass considerably.

All-in-all, this appears to be a rather conservative design as compared with the CS Concept, along with BMW's other efforts over the last few years. We'll reserve final judgement for the day we get to see the new 7 Series in the flesh, of course, perhaps in September at the Paris Auto Show. Thanks for the tip, Brett!

The U.K. has been planning on requiring 2.5 percent of all road fuels sold to come from biofuels, rising to 5 percent by 2010, as part of a plan known as the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO). The time has finally come for that plan to commence, as April 15 marked its official start.

Transport Minister Jim Fitzpatrick says,”Making it easier for motorists to use greener fuel is an important step towards reducing carbon emissions from transport. It should help save millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide in the coming years.” Requiring biofuels is not enough, thought, as the methods used to create the fuels and the sustainability of the process is equally as important. The DfT is on it and, starting in September of this year, the Renewable Fuels Agency will publish reports from fuel suppliers regarding the sustainability and environmental impact of the fuels that they deliver.

There are three ways for suppliers to meet the standards as required by the RTFO:

  • By supplying the relevant amount of biofuel themselves
  • By purchasing certificates from another transport
  • By paying a ‘buy out’ price in respect of some or all of their obligation

Perhaps we could do without the ‘buy out’ capability, but we’ll be monitoring the situation to see how effective the RTFO is in the coming months. Read the press release after the break.

Press Release:

(DFT) Green light for cleaner, greener fuels

Motorists will be able to fill their tanks with greener fuels when a new initiative comes into force in the UK from tomorrow.

The move is known as the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) and requires 2.5% of all road fuels sold to come from biofuels, rising to 5% by 2010. Motorists will fill their vehicles as normal, but the change is expected to save 2.5million tonnes of carbon dioxide by 2010.

It is part of a package of measures being taken to reduce the impact of transport on the environment.

The UK has gone further than any other country to give fuel suppliers a real incentive to produce sustainable biofuels that do not harm the environment. Suppliers are required to produce sustainability reports including information on where their biofuel crops come from and the level of carbon savings they will achieve. The Renewable Fuels Agency will publish these reports and compare the performance of transport fuel suppliers.

Alongside this, a review into the indirect impacts of biofuels has already been announced by Ruth Kelly to ensure that the full economic and environmental impacts of biofuel production are taken into account in the formation of UK policy beyond 2010.

Transport Minister Jim Fitzpatrick said:

“Making it easier for motorists to use greener fuel is an important step towards reducing carbon emissions from transport. It should help save millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide in the coming years.

“But we must do all we can to ensure biofuels are produced sustainably. We know people are concerned about the environmental risks associated with expanding biofuel production and we take those concerns very seriously.

“That is why we want to introduce mandatory standards as soon as possible to guarantee that biofuels don’t cause deforestation or food shortages and we are leading international work to do this. In the meantime, we require suppliers to produce sustainability reports, providing an immediate incentive for them to source biofuels responsibly.”

Phil Woolas, Minister for the Environment said:

“Emissions from transport need to go down if we are to make serious headway in tackling dangerous climate change and this initiative has the potential to deliver considerable carbon savings.

“Obviously sustainability needs to be at the heart of all biofuel production and it will remain at the forefront of all policy development in this area. We must be able to produce biofuel without causing a negative impact on our natural environment.”

The Government has also recently published a body of research as a contribution to the debate on the wider sustainability impacts of biofuels.

The first, a review of work on the environmental sustainability of international biofuels production and use, commissioned by Defra, is an appraisal of the current evidence of the opportunities and threats from biofuel production.

The second considers the possible impact of the RTFO on users of tallow. It suggests that turning tallow into biodiesel does not deliver any net environmental benefits compared to the current uses of tallow.

The pressure is on now for Ford, which has had the ponycar market to itself for the better part of a decade. With the return of the Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger, Ford will surely be stepping up the Mustang's performance when it receives a makeover for 2010. In an interview with stuff.co.nz, Bill Osborne, President of Ford Australia, claims that Ford is considering using a 5.0L V8 for the new Falcon - the same engine being developed for the upcoming Mustang. While nothing has been officially confirmed by Ford, this is further evidence that the 5.0 will be making a return since it was dropped from the Mustang back in 1995.

Assuming the 5.0 V8 will be available for the 2010 Mustang, there are many questions that still remain. It's possible the 5.0 could become standard, but it could also be reserved for use in a special edition Mustang like a Boss or Mach 1. There is also the question of how the engine is being developed. The simplest answer is that it will be based on the current modular V8 architecture and could be a stroked version of the 4.6L V8.

We would love to see something similar to the 5.0 V8 in the Saleen Parnelli Jones Limited Edition Mustang that we sampled last year. With 400 bhp and 390 lb-ft of torque, it was a smooth and powerful engine that suited the Mustang well.

Scania has announced that, after 20 years of providing ethanol buses, the Swedish company (owned by Volkswagen) is going to sell ethanol trucks from the next model year onwards. The marque also announced agreements to build a network of fueling stations to make it easily available for small businesses to buy the biofuel. According to Scania’s data, ethanol produced from sugarcane can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90 percent compared to a regular diesel engine. Scania stated that it’s betting on ethanol because it’s the most cost-efficient biofuel available.

What you might find interesting is that Scania’s technology makes engines work according to the diesel principle (compression-ignition). This allow the engines to be as efficient as diesel units. Scania’s ethanol contains 5-7 percent special additives that improve ignition and lubrication. Most current flex-fuel engines compatible with ethanol use the otto cycle with lower efficiency. Current ethanol-powered buses by Scania are already running in countries such as Norway, Spain, Italy, Poland, United Kingdom, China, Australia and Brazil.

Opel Insignia Leaked Photos

Opel tried to tease us by releasing these teaser photos of the upcoming Opel Insignia, which will make it’s debut on July 2nd, at the London Motor Show. However, Opel’s car won’t be such a big surprise, because the Dutch website AutoWeek broke the embargo and published yesterday a set of official photos of the Insignia.

The Opel Insignia will be the Vectra’s successor and it will also mark the debut of the new Vauxhall logo. Placed in the D segment, the car will compete with the new Ford Mondeo, the Mazda 6, the Renault Laguna or the Volkswagen Passat. Though no official details on the Insignia were made available, once the embrago has been broken, we suspect Opel will soon come with an official announcement.

More leaked photos after the jump.

We just got off the phone with Frédérique Le Grèves, Nissan's VP of Corporate Communications, and had a chance to ask her some more questions about the Japanese automaker's recently announced partnership with Chrysler LLC. The partnership involves Chrysler building a full-size truck for Nissan at its Saltillo, Mexico plant and Nissan building a small car for Chrysler at its Oppama plant in Japan. While Le Grèves wasn't able to offer many specific details because the car won't arrive until 2010 and the truck a year later in 2011, she did shed some light on a few things.

For one, when asked about what engines the next-gen Titan (we're not sure if Nissan will rename the truck) would use, Le Grèves remarked that partnering with Chrysler would allow Nissan to offer more options to its customers. Thus, the Titan may be powered by not only the company's venerable VK56 V8, but also a selection of engines from Chrysler. She indicated that the partnership would at least give Nissan the opportunity to expand the features, options and configurations it currently offers in the Titan. We also asked how unique the next-gen Titan's design would be compared to the Ram, and were assured it would be 100% recognizable as a Nissan. Based on that, we're expecting more differentiation that we got with Volkswagen's version of Chrysler's minivans, the Routan.

As for the small car, since most of the decisions involving its development will be made by Chrysler, there wasn't too much news from Nissan on it. Since all official commentary on the small car has not specified whether it will be front-wheel-drive or not, we asked if there were at least the possibility that it could be rear-wheel-drive. Being that the Oppama plant currently builds a number of front-wheel-drive vehicles like the Cube, March, Tiida/Versa and Note, one would expect Chrysler's small car to fall in line and be front-wheel-drive as well, but no one's been able to confirm this small point yet.

It appears that we all have to wait for each automaker to get further along on their development of these vehicles before we get any more solid details than this.

Thanks to Mike Levine from Pickuptruck.com for setting up the interview!
