A couple of weeks back I wrote a bit about the new Dodge Challenger SRT-8. But to honor the embargo that the Public Relations people put on driving impressions, I had to hold the best stuff until now. And man, was it worth the wait!

Despite a sagging economy, sinking car sales and soaring gas prices, the SRT-8 version of the Challenger is going to do just fine. That, despite the fact it only averages 15 mpg and costs $40,000. No worries, mate, it's the other numbers that are going to sell this car.

Check 'em out:
0-60 mph: 4.9 seconds
¼ mile: 13.7 seconds
0-100-0 mph: under 17 seconds
60-0 mph: 110 feet

When it comes to top speed, the SRT people have had the car up to 170 mph, but that was on an oval. Since the Challenger is not speed-limited in any way except for its aerodynamic drag, they believe that out on the Salt Flats it will go even faster.

While it may seem that the coolest cars are only available to those with means, the industry continues to compete most heavily in their largest volume segments. The result is that there is a wealth of "cool cars" available for less than $18,000, and Kelly Blue Book has compiled a list of their top ten for 2008.

The list - composed mainly of domestics and Japanese automobiles - includes the Ford Focus, Honda Fit, Jeep Patriot, Mazda3, Mitsubishi Lancer, Pontiac Vibe, Scion xB, Subaru Impreza, Suzuki SX4 and Volkswagen Rabbit. Several of the cars stayed on the list from last year, however some are newcomers to the Blue Book ranking. Among the factors KBB included in their decision were safety, fuel economy, interior size, comfort, technology, fun-to-drive and the intangible "cool" factor. KBB also notes that many of the vehicles on the list are packed with features like sat-nav, music drives, iPod and Bluetooth connectivity, push-button start and leather seating. While many of those features - like the push-button ignition and iPod connector - cost close to nothing for carmakers to include, many of the features were only available on top-of-the-line luxury automobiles just a few years ago.

Follow the jump for the press release or the link to KBB.com for more information on the top ten coolest cars on a budget.

Click above for photo gallery. Follow the jump for the music video.

The music video for the updated Speed Racer theme, "Go Speed Racer Go", has hit the web, and while the song itself gets annoying after a couple of verses (how many times can you listen to that refrain before going insane?), the actual video is mesmerizing. There's a lot of footage that hasn't been seen in the trailers and ads so far, and the cartoon come-to-life visuals are simply eye-popping. In that respect, anyone who ponies up ten bucks for a ticket is going to get his or her money's worth. Hopefully, the strength of the story can match the undeniable visual power the Wachowski's onscreen kaleidoscope is set to deliver. At least one early review indicates that may not be the case, unfortunately. We'll wait 'till we see it ourselves next weekend to pass final judgement. In the meantime, feast your eyes on the new video after the jump.

So, how can PETA use high gas prices and a concern over global warming to advance a meat-free diet for all? How about through the Lettuce Ladies? As you can probably tell from the picture above and the gallery photos below, Lettuce Ladies are, well, ladies who wear not much other than lettuce to attract attention to a messsage. In this case, the message is that eating a pound of meat creates the same wear and tear on the environment as driving a Hummer 40 miles.

This week, the idea was to have two Lettuce Ladies stand at a Lynchburg, Virginia BP gas station during lunch and tell drivers that by switching to a vegetarian diet, drivers could do more for the environment than they could if they switched from a standard car to a Prius. (It’s dependent on a person’s annual driving details to see if that statement is true or false, but there’s no question that limiting our intake of modern megafarm meat is a move in favor of the environment). The two Ladies handed out Tofurky sandwiches and gift cards for free gas.

We don’t have any pictures from the Lynchburg event, but we do have a gallery of images from other Lettuce Ladies protests from around the country. Check ‘em out by clicking the images below.

For several years now, Volkswagen has been running diesel-powered Touaregs in a variety of off-road series around the world, including the Dakar Rally, and in the last couple of years, they have won their classes at the Baja 500 and Pikes Peak Hill Climb. The versions used so far have run either a 2.5L five-cylinder engine or the 5.0L V10. Arciero-Miller Racing announced at last year's SEMA show that it was building a new Touareg to compete in the SCORE Trophy Truck Open Production - Unlimited Class. During the inaugural Jetta TDI Cup race last weekend, VW of America PR boss Steve Keyes revealed that the new truck would be powered by the 6.0L V12 TDI diesel that is going into the Audi Q7 TDI V12. That's also the same engine that propels the Audi R8 TDI concept. The tube frame Touareg Trophy Truck will be covered with body work developed by VW that looks vaguely like a Touareg while being a foot longer. The automaker hasn't announced were it will unveil the new off-road racer this fall, but it is scheduled to run in the Baja 1000 this November.

The Nissan GT-R is a legend in the making, and hardly a week goes by without the twin-turbo beast doing something amazing. Equally legendary for gaming enthusiasts is the Gran Turismo series, which is the best-selling Playstation game of all time, and the mother of all digital racing competitions. GT creator Kazunori Yamauchi, not surprisingly a hard-core car enthusiast, got behind the wheel of the Nissan GT-R and hit 193 mph just for kicks.

Hit the jump for video of Yamauchi racing around a wet Nurburgring in the GT-R. The legendary game creator held his own on the daunting track in very bad conditions, and the GT-R looks and sounds devilish as it pounds through the 'Ring's challenging bends. During his ten laps of the 'Ring, Yamauchi hit .6 on the G-meter when the GT-R forcefully kicked out on him, which rightfully scared the daylights out of him. Yamauchi also said that driving the GT-R was less like driving a thoroughbred and more like sitting astride a lion. While we don't think Yamauchi has ever driven a lion, but we get the point. He also said that playing Gran Turismo helped him keep a good racing line on the 'Ring, which prompted this blogger to immediately get GT5 Prologue (true story).

Toyota’s Camry Hybrid is selling like crazy these days. Last year, Toyota managed to sell 54,477 Camry Hybrids, an impressive figure no doubt, and sales are showing no signs of slowing down. For example, in the month of March, Toyota set a new record for the hybrid version of the Camry by selling 6,930. For the year, it is on track to sell over 60,000 of its midsize hybrid sedan, a 10 percent increase over the previous year. In fact, the Camry Hybrid, which is EPA rated at 33 miles per gallon city and 34 miles per gallon highway, is easily outselling the 268 horsepower 3.5 liter V6 powered model, which is rated at 19 city and 28 highway. Historically, American buyers have shown a propensity to choose the largest engine available.

When sales of the Prius and the Camry Hybrid are combined, Toyota easily remains the world’s leader in hybrid vehicle sales and appears a lock to remain that way, at least for the next few years.

We've heard the styling of some Italian cars being referred to as sensual before, so it comes as little surprise that the Italian styling firm Pininfarina's interest was piqued when it heard that a young Indian's car designs were inspired by the ancient love-making guide Kama Sutra. Ramesh Gound, a student of the National Institute of design in India says, "When I thought of what the world associates with India, it is Kama Sutra that came to my mind. After studying Kama Sutra, I realized its essence and my theme emerged -- two objects coming together and moving in one direction with a force of passion." He adds, "the exteriors of the body curve and become part of the interiors of the car." Yeah... so it sounds like his studies into Kama Sutra proved useful. For all of his hard work, Gound was rewarded with an internship at the famous Italian design house.

Ford’s President of the Americas, Mark Fields, wants the company to build more E85 capable flex-fuel vehicles but he doesn’t want to have to deal with state level fuel economy or carbon dioxide regulations. The former should be no surprise as every car and truck so equipped gets a credit of 1.2mpg towards its mileage rating. Fields also wants to see mileage mandates done at a national rather than at the state level. Like other car-makers, Ford’s issue is apparently not so much with having to meet whatever mandate is enacted. They just don’t want to do the paperwork and testing repeatedly for potentially dozens of states. Fields hasn’t said where Ford stands relative to meeting the new CAFE rules but it’s a safe bet that new Ford products will probably be coming with wider tracks and longer wheelbases to increase their footprint. As a result they will have a lower mileage standard to meet. Ford’s upcoming EcoBoost engines will also be getting flex-fuel capability to help meet the new rules.

Get ready for some crazy abbreviations here. Union Rural Electric Cooperative (URE) will debut Ohio’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) on May 3 in Marysville. Created by the Ohio Rural Electric Cooperatives (OREC) and Hybrid Plus in Boulder, Colorado, Plug-In 1 is a converted Ford Escape Hybrid. The stock nickel metal hydride battery has been yanked in favor of a new lithium ion pack which contains 1,600 separate cells that add up to 12 kWhs of capacity.

The PHEV was created by the Ohio-based utility companies to study what effect plug-ins will have on the grid. According to URE President Roger Yoder, “It will yield information of importance not only for the transportation sector but for utilities as we prepare to meet the energy and environmental challenges of the future.” With plug-ins like the Volt expected within a few years, this data will become increasingly important. Plug-In 1 is equipped with an on-board computer which will track all kinds of data which should be useful to the utilities. Full press release after the break.

Press Release:

Plug-In 1, First PHEV in Ohio, Will Appear at URE Annual Meeting

MARYSVILLE, Ohio, April 30 /PRNewswire/ — Union Rural Electric Cooperative (URE) will debut Plug-In 1, Ohio’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), a converted 2008 Ford Escape SUV that can run on a rechargeable advanced battery and achieve 50-60 miles per gallon. It will make its appearance Saturday morning at the Co-op’s Annual Meeting, May 3 at Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium in Marysville.

Plug-In 1 is a research and development project undertaken by Ohio Rural Electric Cooperatives (OREC) to learn how PHEVs perform under rural highway use, pros and cons of the lithium-ion battery and recharging system, and the potential impact of hybrid electric cars on rural utility systems.

“This is a unique vehicle, and the first of its type in the state,” said URE President Roger Yoder. “It will yield information of importance not only for the transportation sector but for utilities as we prepare to meet the energy and environmental challenges of the future.”

PHEVs are not all-electric cars, nor are they conventional hybrids. The conversion involves installation of a plug-in charging system and replacement of the standard hybrid’s nickel-metal hydride battery with 1,600 lithium-ion battery cells (imagine a giant laptop computer battery), boasting 12-kilowatt hours of storage capacity.

Not yet commercially available from major automakers, PHEV conversions - hybrid engine system to plug-in rechargeable - are being been done by a handful of firms, including Hybrid Plus in Boulder, Col., where Plug-In 1 was transformed.

Plug-In 1 must be connected to a household electrical circuit for full recharging, although it also works like a conventional hybrid vehicle. While on the road, engine operation and regenerative braking help offset battery use, but eventually the driver will need to find a handy outlet within reach of an extension cord. It takes 8-10 hours of recharging time to fully restore the vehicle’s battery from a 90% depletion level.

During the first 60 miles of operation on a fully charged battery, it is estimated that Plug-In 1 will get the equivalent of 50-60 mpg. As the battery drains and the gas engine takes over, the PHEV achieves 25-35 mpg. Overall, it is expected that the cost of running the PHEV will be equivalent to paying $1.20-$1.40 per gallon for gasoline.

Plug-In 1 and other prototype PHEVs will produce valuable data for electric utilities. The vehicle is equipped with an on-board computer monitoring system so its performance can be recorded and analyzed. The information will be shared in order to evaluate the effectiveness of PHEVs in highway operation and whether these vehicles represent a step toward less reliance on foreign oil. Researchers and car companies also are keenly interested in possible environmental benefits.

The Cooperative Research Network (CRN) and Electric Power Research Institute(EPRI) have undertaken national PHEV studies.

“Widespread adoption [of PHEVs] might reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles by more than 450-million metric tons annually by 2050,” said Mark Duvall, director of electric transportation for EPRI, a non-profit, utility-based consortium whose members and project partners include Electric Cooperatives.

Duvall pointed out that such a reduction would be the equivalent of taking 82 million conventional passenger cars off the nation’s highways.

Few companies do wagons like Audi does. Take, for example, the RS6 Avant - the supercar-crushing super-estate with the 580+hp twin-turbo V10. The combination of "wagon" and "exotic" in the same sentence make for a real attention-grabber, as far as family-haulers go, but push comes to shove, we're not sure we share our European counterparts' love for estate wagons. That's why Audi has been preparing a sedan version of the RS6. The undisguised spy shots of the sedan we caught back in February suggested the car was just about ready, but another set of spy shots now surfacing - a month and a half later - show that Audi may have gone back to the drawing board.

The new candids show a beefed-up A6 - complete with aggressive front end, bulging fenders, side skirts and jumbo wheels, suggesting the RS6 despite the lack of badging - but with a little surprise around back: a rear end styled like that of the newer, smaller A4 sedan and A5 coupe. The shots suggest that Audi is preparing a little butt-lift for the entire A6 range to fall in line with its new posterior styling direction, but is using the RS6 to showcase it first. Like we said with the last round of spy shots, this makes perfect sense when you consider that most drivers won't be seeing much else of the RS6 as it thunders down the left-hand lane.

Follow the jump for the video report on Volvo's safety goals

We all know how seriously Volvo approaches vehicle safety. At least we thought we did. In a new Reuters video feature, we learn that the safety-obsessed Swedish automaker has goals far loftier than we had imagined. You see, Volvo has set a goal of zero injuries or deaths to passengers in its vehicles by the year 2020. According to reporter Paul Chapman, Volvo wants to create a car that basically "forms a giant bumper" around its occupants to protect them if and when the need arises. A Volvo representative quoted on camera goes on to state that beyond the elimination of crash-related death and injury, Volvo would like to see the elimination of car accidents altogether.

While this admirable sentiment undoubtedly serves as a goal-setting mechanism for Volvo safety engineers, it's hard to view it as anything other than hopeless optimism unless you completely remove the human element from driving (and presumably replace all cars with Miracle Safety Volvos). You can build the most perfect car in the world and equip it with the greatest safety features imaginable, but cars can't predict everything, and humans are anything but predictable -- as any readers who commute amongst the general populace can attest. We'll know Volvo's really getting closer to safety Nirvana when it unveils a feature that determines when the driver next to you is simultaneously steering with his knees, reading a newspaper, sending text messages, and eating Ramen noodles at highway velocity.

Watch the full report after the jump.

The Republic of Turkey was founded in 1923. If you think this has nothing to do with green cars, you’re mostly right. Today, though, it does, if only because someone (or a group of someones) has hacked into the news section of Porsche’s Judicial Review website and posted a few messages in Turkish stating that the site has been hacked. I don’t read Turkish, so I’m not certain what the hack says, exactly, but it doesn’t seem to be the only time 1923Turk has struck. Right off the top of my head, I can’t see any reason for pro-Turkey hackers to take aim at the ongoing dispute between Porsche and Transport for London’s congestion charge (Forgot what this is about? Check out our previous posts here and here), but what do I know about haxors and their targets?

Speaking about the Porsche fight, the company announced today the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has applied to be an interested party in the judicial review against the £25 congestion charge. Read more after the break.

Statement from Porsche:

Porsche Welcomes Borough of Kensington and Chelsea to Congestion Charge Fight

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has applied to join Porsche as an interested party in the judicial review of the Mayor of London’s unfair £25 tax on motorists.

Commenting on the news, Andy Goss, Managing Director of Porsche Cars GB, said; “I am pleased that Kensington and Chelsea has joined us in our fight against this unfair, counter-productive tax against motorists. It is becoming increasingly clear that Londoners are rejecting this unfair £25 charge that will likely make congestion and the environment worse than it is today.”

OPEC president Chakib Khelil believes that the already staggering price for a barrel of oil could continue to rise. Citing the low value of the U.S. dollar, Khelil says that investors are likely to continue to place their bets on oil, a necessary commodity. With current prices hovering around $120 per barrel of dino-juice, the sixty percent increase mentioned by OPEC’s leading man would place the going-rate darn near $200 a barrel.

Those of us living in the U.S. have seen our gas prices rise at an alarming rate, but Whatcar in the U.K. highlights more problems for those living across the pond. A strike at the Grangemoth oil refinery in Scotland could cause a ripple effect which would reach consumers just in time for the summer driving season. OPEC has chosen not to increase their output to help curb the supply and demand problem. Kinda makes us long for the electric car, huh?

This year's Mille Miglia will be partially sponsored by Audi and the quad-ring crew is tapping Audi Tradition to pull six vehicles from the automaker's storied history out of the museum and onto the road. In attendance this year will be three Wanderer W25s from 1936, 1927 and 1938, each powered by the original, 55 hp engines, along with one DKW 3=6 and two DKW Monzas. With that kind of historic iron participating in the 1,000-mile rally, Audi needs competent drivers behind the wheel. While we can't attest to the driving prowess of Rupert Stadler, Audi's board chair; Stephan Grühsem, VAG's head of communications; famous German actor Tomas Heinze; or Toni Melfi, head of communications for Audi, we're sure that two-time World Rally Champion Christian Geistdörfer won't have a problem piloting any of the vehicles that helped to forge Audi's legacy.

Hit the jump for all the details on the drivers and the cars.

Audi hopes to win customers away from BMW’s Z4 and Mercedes-Benz’s SLK class with its new TT-S premium roadster.

Natalia Schwark, Audi executive for product marketing for sports cars, said that Audi was “looking at all the competition in the premium roadster segment”--but in particular the Mercedes SLK and BMW Z4.

“These are the main competitors for this car,” Schwark said.

The TT-S is a sportier version of the Audi TT. The TT-S’s 2.0-liter gasoline engine has been tuned to produce 272 hp, up from 200 hp on the original car, and accelerates from 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds. Audi uses the S badge for the sportier variants of its lineup. The automaker already has S versions of the A3, A4, A5, A6 and A8.

Both of Audi’s German premium rivals have already introduced sportier versions of their premium roadsters. Mercedes launched an AMG version of the SLK class in 2001, while
BMW introduced an M version of the Z4 in 2005. Mercedes’ in-house AMG unit and BMW’s in-house M division produce high-performance variants of their respective carmakers’ models.

The current SLK AMG uses a 5.4-liter, 360 hp engine that can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.9 seconds, while the Z4 M uses a 3.2-liter, 343 hp engine that can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 5.0 seconds.

The TT was first launched in 1998. The second-generation car went on sale in 2006 and was Europe's best-selling premium roadster last year. Audi sold 38,581 TTs in 2007, up from 14,852 in 2006, according to market researcher JATO Dynamics. The car is built in Gyor, Hungary, where the A3 cabriolet is also made.

Prices for the TT-S will start at 44,900 euros in Germany with tax, or about $69,900 at current exchange rates. That is 12,150 euros, or $18,900, more than the base TT. The TT-S goes on sale across Europe in June.

Upstart lithium battery maker A123 is a lesson in how fast things can move in the battery space. The MIT Technology Review has a story, An Electrifying Startup, in its May/June issue recounting the tale.

Founded in late 2001, small amounts of funding lead to technological breakthroughs by mid-2002. By 2003 Black & Decker was interested in powering its new line of cordless power tools with A123’s new lithium cocktail, and product was rolling off assembly lines in Asia by 2005.

Cut to the burgeoning success of hybrid cars, dependent on batteries to utilize the great efficiencies of electric drive technologies to raise the fuel economy of gasoline-powered cars. NiMH batteries are already raising mpg by 30-50 percent, and had propelled all-electric cars 100 to 140 miles per charge. The greater energy of lithium could promise even higher mpg for hybrids and longer range for EVs with much less weight, the battery bugaboo.

GM finally began to face the reality of hybrids’ market success just as the company was being battered in the press by the true story of EV1 emerging via the documentary Who Killed the Electric Car? GM could have been years ahead of the competition with electric cars powered by its own NiMH venture, just as Toyota carved out its preeminence with hybrids. But, having sold off its 50 percent stake in NiMH to Texaco when it killed off its own electric car, by the time they got serious and announced the Volt, they had to look elsewhere. Into the picture stepped A123 (and other lithium battery makers like LG Chem/Compact Power Inc.). GM may or may not be the first major auto maker with lithium powered cars, but the evidence is in that it is batteries, not fuel cells, that will bring cars with zero emission capability to market in the near term.

America's two most popular spectator sports - football and stock-car racing - are about to cross paths as the New England Patriots' star wide receiver Randy Moss has announced plans to launch his own NASCAR team. Perhaps after losing Super Bowl XLII to the New York Giants back in January, Moss is really starting to think about what to do with his time after this whole football thing runs its course.

His new team named Moss Motorsports will begin competing at select races in this year's Craftsman Truck series in preparation for a full-on assault in the 2009 season at the same level. Details like drivers, sponsors and an engine supplier have yet to be announced, but Moss, who has long been involved with urban youth programs, plans to incorporate his racing team into his social projects.

Car makers the world over are looking for the most cost effective ways to increase fuel economy as fuel prices continue to climb and CO2 limits and fuel economy standards come into force. One approach that seems to be appealing to most is adding direct fuel injection and turbocharging to smaller displacement engines. Continental Automotive Systems sees the trend and is jumping on the bandwagon. Continental has announced their intention to build their first turbocharger plant for production begining in 2011. The initial production run will be for 2.0L four cylinder engines at the rate of 100,000 per year. No location has been announced for the plant, but somewhere in Eastern Europe seems probable. Volkswagen is also rumored to be the first customer for Conti’s turbos.

This latest rendering of the long-rumored return of the Isetta brand, an offshoot of BMW, looks much more modern than any previous rendering that we've seen of the rolling mini-retro-mobile. According to the accompanying report on Autocar, the rear-engined zero emissions vehicle (ZEV) has indeed been approved by BMW, though we've heard nothing truly official as of yet. If true, the U.S. would be the likely first market to see the Isetta, possibly as early as 2012.

At this point, BMW is reportedly still deciding whether or not to offer both electric and internally-combusted versions of the new city car. BMW has quite a few small engines currently powering their line of motorcycles, and one of these engines could make an appearance in the rear of the vehicle. Possible powertrains also include a hybrid, natural gas or even fuel cell variants. Because of the high investment required to get the proposed vehicle off the ground, BMW could partner with Daimler-Benz which already offers its own tiny car under the smart brand. Rumors also link long-time BMW partner Manga Steyr to the project. Interestingly, the Canadian based auto parts giant has recently confirmed that they are working on hybrid vehicle development.

Black Tie Gala, Food, Booze, The New Audi A4 and Miss America

After a very long week in the office, I was looking forward to a relaxing Friday night with my girlfriend. I had been talking to a few of my co-workers and one of them mentioned they were going to the Philadelphia Auto Show's Black Tie Gala event that evening. Having lived in the area for the last couple of years, it was something I always wanted to do.

The reason I hadn't gone in the past is because the price tag for the event was rather steep - $200 for the evening. Seemingly every year the price had gone up, and for whatever reason I just dealt with general admission to the venue. Over the past few years I'd grown weary of car shows being mobbed by people to the point where you really couldn't get a good look at anything for more than a few seconds, as people would shuffle you out of the way for their 10 second chance to glimpse an exotic auto.

Taking a picture was impossible as well, because even if you had enough space to take one someone would walk into your path. This brings me to another point: anything really worth looking at is completely roped off from the general public.

I left the office that day and I told my co-worker to let me know how the event west, as I had explained to him (and now to you) my gripes with past auto shows. On the way home I was enjoying the fact that the week was over and looking forward to my vacation the following week. I then received a text message from my girlfriend and based on an unforeseen family obligation my Friday night suddenly freed up completely.

As luck would have it I was still able to get my hands on a last minute ticket, so I drove home to get suited up for a fun night ahead.

Not wanting to leave my S4 at the mercy of the local parking lot attendants I wisely took the train to the Philadelphia convention center. I also didn't realize the event would also include an open bar for the night. In retrospect it was quite fortunate that I took the train.

I arrived at the event and I was one of the first few people in the door at 7pm on the dot. I figured that the allotted four hours would provide plenty of opportunity to see everything.

The B8 Audi A4

Knowing full well that Audi and the exotics were off on their own floor at the Philadelphia Convention Center, I figured I would head there first. To give you an idea how empty the place was, I'll say that there were more people ready to dust off cars then were people to look at them.

Audi's roped off area included the 2009 A4. At last year's event this same spot was occupied by the R8, but this year the R8 was out on floor duty. Since we were at a true Black Tie Gala they had setup a little step that one could use to walk up onto the display to check out the car.

I actually got the only true preview of this car, as some of the Audi show people freaked out and promptly locked up the car while I was standing there. However, before that happened I managed about two minutes on the inside to check out all the new controls and gadgets. I also popped the hood and the trunk to check out the improvements over the outgoing B7 model.

To be brief, if you want to see what the new A4 cockpit is like then check out the Audi A5 / S5 at your local dealer. From the cockpit perspective the cars are nearly identical. The steering wheel is lifted from the B7 and includes paddle shifters mounted to the back of the wheel (later in the evening it was humorous to hear a Nissan GTR onlooker gripe about Nissan column mounted paddles on its new halo car).

The new LCD screen in the center of the gauge cluster is very easy on the eyes. The MMI and other items were not powered up in the car so I missed the full experience. If it's anything like the MMI setup in the S5 it should be fine. The new speedometer was fun to look at and has a very optimistic 180 printed at the other end of the dial.

Regrettably most of us will never legally see the dial rise past a third of the way up. It's a very good thing Audi has added an electronic speed readout to the center display since it would be very hard to keep an eye on the speedometer on secondary roads.

I remember first seeing the electronic speed paired with analog dial speed on the 996 Porsches which included analog speedometers in 25mph increments. What I would like to see integrated into the center display is oil temperature, boost levels and other vital information that true car junkies could utilize. Being able to scroll through your MP3 list would be nice too. Maybe even steal a page from Buggati and give us an electronic horsepower usage meter. The car tracks all the data, so it only becomes a matter of outpoint at some point.

The back seats do appear to have more space then the outgoing B7. I wouldn't call it a night and day difference, but rear passengers will appreciate the extra space. The seats are also very comfortable. While they're not as good as the Recaros found in the current S4, they appear to be a significant improvement over the B7 A4 seating.

Under the hood it looks like a standard Audi layout. Battery and brake master cylinder are found behind the engine bay in the cowl, though it does appear as if they've moved the engine coolant bottle up closer to the front. I suppose the other big changes are that they ditched the dual strut hood supports in favor of one perhaps for weight reduction.

In addition the washer fluid bottle has been relocated to the cowl from its current location closer to the ABS brick. After quickly looking over the new A5 I would have to say the cars are nearly identical up to the B pillar. Engine layout and the way the other components all come together appear nearly identical. From an engineering perspective as well as a financial perspective this is very wise of Audi. Essentially they're supporting two models with very similar identities.

I also had a chance to look at the trunk area, and those who loved the hinged design and the mini trunk struts will be disappointed with Audi's move back to a more reliable spring and arm system. The spring and arm system is tucked away on the sides, and Audi has done a remarkable job improving the design. Since the trunk arms are very narrow (think of what a banana would look like if you stepped on it), and buried behind the trunk carpets, you'll never have to worry about jamming up the system with an overloaded trunk. Also, since the system uses a plain spring, you'll never have to deal with trunk strut failure again.

When one of those failed on my B6 S4, I realized how heavy the trunk really is. Trunk space appears to be similar to the current A4, but without a measuring tape I cannot really say if there is a gain or loss. The purpose of the switch to the strut and hinge design on the B5 A4 was to gain trunk space and it appears they finally have the best of both worlds.

The wheels and brake system also looks improved. I noticed some changes to the rotor shields, as they appear to be modified for better cooling. I will let someone more informed then myself weigh in on that topic.

Overall, the B8 is a great improvement on the B6/B7 chassis. It's not as drastic of a departure as the B6 was to the B5; rather, it is more of an evolution in the design. I like it a lot and look forward to the future S4 offering from Audi (I'm crossing my fingers for a twin turbo V6).

Audi also brought along an R8 in white with silver door blades. They also had an A3 in Sprint Blue. This shade of blue was attracting a lot of attention from a girl who also had a similarly colored blue dress who posed with her family for a photo. The usual Audi line up with the A8, A6, and Q7 were on site as well.

Miss America

Those of you who know the Philadelphia Auto Show layout know that the upper floor is where Audi, Jaguar, Infinity, and the exotics are displayed (by exotics I mean Maserati, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Aston Martin).

Since this is a smaller auto show the exotic manufacturers typically don't show up. Instead, a local dealer, FC Kerbeck, has stepped in to bring out the full offering. Normally, this area has a wall around it and no one can get in save reporters and people with whom the dealer is familiar. The night of Gala, however, it is open to everyone.

After I finished looking at the Audi's I checked out the exotics. Even at that point no one was really in the area checking out the cars. As I was feverishly snapping away pictures of Bentleys and Lamborghinis I noticed a very attractive young lady with a crown on her head. My inner voice said, who the f@#$ does she thinks she is, Miss America?

I continued to take photos of the cars and moved closer to where this woman was standing with the people from FC Kerbeck. I struck up a conversation with them about Corvettes. For those of you who do not know, aside from an exotic cars dealership, FC Kerbeck owns a Corvette-only dealership in Atlantic City.

After some car talk, I found out the young lady with the crown actually was the newly crowned Miss America, Kristen Haglund. I chatted with her for a bit. Kerbeck wanted some photos with her and the new Corvette ZR1 since she was from the Detroit area of Michigan. I think the Kerbeck folks' pitch was "two beauties from Detroit". The idea seemed appropriate.

Kristen was very nice and very approachable. I congratulated her on her win, and talked about watching the reality show where all the Miss America contestants competed against each other.

Normally I would be tuned into BBC's Top Gear, but occasionally my girlfriend puts me in "Park" and changes the channel (hence why I knew anything about the show). It seems Kristen was only a week or so into her tour as Miss America, and I wished her all the best with her brutal travel and appearance schedule. The only thing I could equate to her job is perhaps what a professional athlete on the road endures. They are in the limelight, as they chose to be; only she does not need to throw a football or have a hundred-mile-an-hour slap shot.

Instead, she has an image to live up to and must conduct herself as Miss America at all times. I would not want a job like that for more than a few weeks, let alone a year. According to Kristen, her travel schedule for appearances for the next year will average around 20,000 miles a month.

Back to the Cars

Kerbeck brought out some wonderful exotics for the show. Among the more notable was the Rolls-Royce Drophead Coupé. I took a video of them dropping the top on the car. Simply put, it's gorgeous.

Annoyingly, since BMW owns Rolls-Royce, it includes the same accessory start chimes as a 7-series. The rear deck on the trunk is made of teak, similar to the would-be owner's yacht. In addition, since it is equipped with suicide doors, you can flick a switch near the A-pillar and not be bothered with closing the door, as the car does it for you. The hood features a two-tone look, with the center of the hood finished in brushed aluminum.

The glass on the car is also double paned, and I could see the panes of glass sandwiched together at the edges.

The Orange and Lime Lamborghini Gallardos were very nice as well. If you are going to go Lamborghini, loud is the only way to go. The cars also included the RNS-E navigation system that most of the B7 owners are familiar with, and a backup camera integrated into the spoiler. Very nice touch since backing into something with a Lamborghini would not only be embarrassing, but also expensive.
